Organic Mosquito Control Guide

Below you'll find information about how to control mosquitoes organically.

Mosquito control product How it works Application directions and notes

Mosquito Barrier

Garlic Barrier

Repels adult mosquitoes from their usual resting places, especially on the the undersides of leaves. Kills larvae when applied to breeding areas of stagnant water.

Mix one part Mosquito Barrier or Garlic Barrier with a hundred parts of water. (Note: quart and pint sizes are already diluted - use 10 parts water in this case.)

For example, mix 1.25 ounces of Mosquito or Garlic Barrier with 1 gallon of water. Add 1.25 ounces of a "sticker", such as canola oil,  soy bean oil. Add 1/2 teaspoon of liquid dishwashing soap. Spray areas of the garden where you want to control mosquitoes, including the plantings, foliage, and lawn areas where they rest. The best times to spray are before mid-morning or late afternoon towards dusk. Note: avoid spraying areas where you require plant pollination (Mosquito Barrier will keep bees away too).

Mosquito Larvicide
Kills larvae and pupa stages of mosquitoes. It is designed for surface application to intermittently flooded areas, temporary rain pools, sloughs, and log ponds.. It does not smear or deface the environment with dark, filmy oils or residues. Active ingredients include mineral oil (98%) and inert materials (2%). Can be used all season long and does not depend on life cycle timing for effectiveness. Mix with water as per instructions and shake well before using. Avoid solid stream, high pressure or high velocity applications. Apply to leave a thin film over surface of breeding areas. Include treatment of drainage ditches, catch basins, stagnant pools, and open sewage basins to improve overall control. Since high pressures or high velocities are not needed, lighter less expensive equipment can be effectively used. Since mosquitoes can hatch in 5 to 7 days of warm weather, any exposed stagnant water should be treated.

DEET-Free Botanical Gel

Apply this DEET-free product to your exposed skin and it will repel mosquitoes and other biting insects. Made from neem oil, aloe vera and other natural ingredients, it's great for protecting you while you work or relax in the garden. Apply liberally every 4 hours or as needed.
